A Short Introduction
Statement
Mathematical models and methods have shaped our contemporary economy and technology - and continue
to do so more and more. Thus, mathematics is a basic and fundamental part of studying these fields.
Without a thorough understanding of mathematics students do not have the essential key qualification
required and needed.
Experience
In school, students often did not acquire the mathematical understanding engineering is based on,
i.e. the requirements exceed their knowledge by far. This discrepancy is caused by "forgotten knowledge",
a wrong understanding of what is important and what is not, a lack of experience, deficient application
and studying techniques etc.
Just a Simple Offer
To boost the progress of students, the University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg offers this introductory
course.
Proviso
This introductory course can certainly not be used as a simple repetition of the mathematical knowledge
provided by the last two school years preparing students for the A-level; neither is it a high-speed
version of those years. It can be, however, a useful way of refreshing the studentīs memory by re-acquainting
him/her with mathematical approaches; it may also serve as a test of some of the basic knowledge a student
should have.
Purpose
We hope to provide students with a guideline to show them what we expect of them. We also hope that
students will discover some of their probably existing mathematical weaknesses and then do something
about them in good time.
The exercises and checks offered are the first step. In addition, we also recommend a few textbooks
to enhance the knowledge - and there are some rather good books out here. Should you still be a high
school student, please talk to your math teachers of how to strengthen your mathematical abilities
in order to be successful.
